Fernando VII's bust coinage from Lima represents one of the more turbulent production windows in colonial Spanish American minting. By 1812, Peru remained loyalist while most of Spanish America was fracturing under independence movements, and the Lima Mint was under pressure to maintain coin output for a Crown that no longer controlled its own peninsula — Napoleon had placed Joseph Bonaparte on the Spanish throne in 1808, making Fernando VII a king in exile for whom these coins were struck.
The "small draped bust" variety distinguishes this from the earlier imaginary portrait types, a change driven by the Cádiz Cortes's push for greater uniformity across colonial mints. Dies were cut locally, which accounts for the subtle variation in bust size and style across the 1812–1813 window.
