Carlos IV inherited the Spanish throne in 1788 and almost immediately faced the destabilizing pressure of revolutionary France next door — a fact that shaped colonial fiscal policy throughout his reign. Lima's gold output during this period was substantial, feeding war debts and subsidy payments that Spain could not otherwise meet.
The Lima mint used the IJ assayer combination through much of this run, with the transition to JP marking a distinct subtype collectors track separately. Dies for the 4 escudos denomination wore quickly under gold's demands, and minor die cracks on later strikes are not uncommon.
