Obverse description Armored bust of King Carlos IV facing right, with curled hair tied at the nape and a lace jabot visible at the throat, rendered in high relief against a smooth field. The effigy is depicted in the neoclassical portrait style characteristic of late Spanish colonial coinage. The circumferential legend reads CAROL • IIII • D • G • HISP • ET IND • R •, identifying the monarch as King of Spain and the Indies by the Grace of God. The mint date appears in the lower portion of the field between two pellets. A finely dentilated border encircles the entire design.

Reverse description The crowned quartered arms of Spain occupy the central field, displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León in the principal quarters, with the pomegranate of Granada in base and the fleurs-de-lis of the Bourbon dynasty in the escutcheon at center. The shield is flanked on either side by elaborate laurel and olive branches tied at the base, with the denomination numeral 4 to the left and the value mark S to the right of the arms. The mint mark NG (Nueva Guatemala) and assayer initial M appear in the lower exergual area. The circumferential legend IN • UTROQ • FELIX • AUSPICE • DEO encircles the design, and a dentilated border frames the entire reverse.
