Obverse description Central field displays the Arms of Guernsey, a shield bearing three passant leopards arranged in pale on a vertically-lined field, surmounted by a sprig of three leaves emerging from the top of the shield. The legend GUERNESEY curves along the lower periphery in bold serif capitals. The entire design is encircled by a continuous beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse presents a plain, unadorned field bearing the denomination numeral '4' prominently at the top, followed by the word DOUBLES in bold serif capitals at centre, and the date 1889 in large numerals below. The Heaton Mint mark 'H' appears in small letters at the bottom of the field, just above the inner beaded border that encircles the entire design.
