Astarabad — modern Gorgan in northeastern Iran — functioned as a semi-autonomous emirate during the fractured decades following the collapse of Ilkhanid authority. The 1350s placed it squarely within the political vacuum that the Black Death and Ilkhanid dissolution had opened across the eastern Islamic world, with local strongmen striking coin to assert legitimacy as much as to facilitate trade. Wali Bazar's name appearing on this issue is itself the primary historical record of his tenure; the numismatic evidence often outlasts the chronicles for rulers of this tier.
