Obverse description Uniface note printed in black letterpress on plain paper with a pink guilloche rosette underprint at centre. At upper left, a sideway legend reads 'Genehmigt durch den Reichsminister der Finanzen'; at upper centre the exchange rate heading '1 Cent = 4,2 Pfennig Gold' is set above the title 'Kassenschein über' and the large bold denomination '1 CENT'. The body of the note carries a full paragraph of German text detailing the gold-backed nature of the instrument, referencing 6% Goldschatzanweisungen des Deutschen Reiches deposited at the Reichsbank in Bremen, followed by the place and date 'BREMEN, 7. November 1923' and the issuing authority 'DIE STAATSHAUPTKASSE:', with two manuscript signatures below. The printer's imprint 'HAUSCHILD, BREMEN' appears at lower left.

Comments

Bremen's Staatshauptkasse issued this note during the Weimar hyperinflation period as part of a broader German experiment with gold-indexed emergency currency — Goldpfennig notes denominated in fractions tied to stable foreign or commodity values rather than the collapsing Papiermark. The dual denomination, expressing the same unit as both 4.2 Pfennig Gold and 1 US-Cent, reflects the practical reality of 1923: the American dollar had become a more reliable unit of account than anything the Reichsbank could offer.

H.M. Hauschild was a Bremen publishing and printing house, not a specialist security printer. Local procurement was the norm for Notgeld at this level.
