备注

These notes were issued by the Casa de Fundição Real do Ouro — the royal gold smelting houses of Minas Gerais — as a local fiduciary instrument tied directly to gold deposits. A holder presenting this note could theoretically redeem it for the equivalent weight in refined gold at the foundry itself, making it less a conventional banknote than a gold receipt in paper form. The system was designed to reduce the chronic problem of gold dust and nuggets circulating informally as currency throughout the mining captaincy.

1808 is the critical year: the Portuguese royal court fled Lisbon ahead of Napoleon's invasion and relocated to Rio de Janeiro, immediately liberalizing Brazilian commerce and finance. These notes were authorized in that charged administrative moment. Francisco Antônio da Silva's engraving work is locally produced — genuinely rare for Brazilian paper of this period, when most quality printing depended on Lisbon or foreign contractors.
