Obverse description Bare-headed, wigged bust of King João V facing right, rendered in high relief in the Baroque portrait style typical of early 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. The king's long curled periwig falls to the shoulder, and the truncation of the neck is visible at the base. Below the bust, the mint mark 'M' for Vila Rica and the date are struck in the lower field. The circumferential Latin legend reads IOANNES.V.D.G.PORT.ET ALG.REX, separated by pellets, running clockwise around the entire obverse within a toothed border.

Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed prominently at centre, featuring the quintas shield charged with five bezants arranged in saltire, each containing five roundels, set within the larger escutcheon bordered by the seven castles of the Kingdom of the Algarves. The coat of arms is surmounted by an elaborate Portuguese royal crown, and the entire achievement is supported by baroque ornamental mantling and scrollwork that fills the field. The circumferential Latin motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES encircles the design within a toothed border, the legend separated by small pellets.
