The wedge-tailed eagle series has been Perth Mint's flagship ultra-high relief programme for over a decade, and the shift to Charles III's effigy in 2024 marks the first major obverse change since the series launched — a transition delayed by Elizabeth II's death in September 2022 and the subsequent approval process for Jody Clark's portrait under the new reign. At one kilogram of .9999 gold, these are produced in strictly limited numbers dictated less by demand than by the physical constraints of the hydraulic presses required to achieve the relief depth.
The reverse proof finish on ultra-high relief coinage at this scale is technically unforgiving — any contamination in the die transfer process shows immediately on the mirrored fields.
