Reverse description The reverse retains the original design of the Brazilian host coin, featuring the date — here '1820' — and denomination numerals at center, enclosed within a wreath of oak and laurel branches tied at the base. The circular legend 'JOANNES VI D. G. PORT. BRAES ET ALC. REX' surrounds the wreath, referring to King João VI of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. A royal crown surmounts the composition at the top of the field. The reeded border of the host coin is clearly visible.

Additional information

The crowned "G.P." countermark — standing for Governo Português — was applied in 1887 to restamp Brazilian 320 réis pieces for circulation in the Azores, reducing their official face value to 300 réis in the process. Portugal's Atlantic island territories had chronic shortages of small coinage throughout the nineteenth century, and countermarking foreign silver was a recurring administrative solution rather than an exceptional one.

The Brazilian host coins were themselves already decades old by the time the punch was applied.
