| 正面描述 | Conjoined effigies of Emperor Pedro I and President Emílio Garrastazu Médici facing left, rendered in a bold, stylized incuse outline technique against a brushed field. The legend BRASIL is inscribed vertically to the left of the portraits. Below the busts, the commemorative dates 1822 and 1972 are engraved in a decorative flowing script, evoking the sesquicentennial span of Brazilian independence. |

Brazil's sesquicentennial in 1972 fell squarely under the military government of Emílio Médici, at the height of what the regime called the "Economic Miracle" — GDP growth exceeding 10% annually, paired with severe political repression. The commemorative program was as much propaganda as numismatics, projecting national confidence through gold at a moment when dissent was being systematically silenced.
The .920 fineness follows the old Brazilian gold standard rather than the more common .900 used by contemporaries, a deliberate callback to imperial-era coinage.
