Additional information

Brazil's sesquicentennial in 1972 fell squarely under the military government of Emílio Médici, at the height of what the regime called the "Economic Miracle" — GDP growth exceeding 10% annually, paired with severe political repression. The commemorative program was as much propaganda as numismatics, projecting national confidence through gold at a moment when dissent was being systematically silenced.

The .920 fineness follows the old Brazilian gold standard rather than the more common .900 used by contemporaries, a deliberate callback to imperial-era coinage.
