The Recife mint operated for barely a decade, established by the Dutch West India Company after its seizure of Portuguese Brazil in the 1630s. This 1654 piece is among the final issues from that facility — the Dutch surrendered Recife to the Portuguese in January of that year, ending twenty-four years of Dutch Brazil. Coins struck in the last months of occupation are genuinely scarce; the mint's output had already been curtailed as the military situation deteriorated.
The WIC operated the mint as a commercial necessity, not a state function — paying soldiers and trading in a colony thousands of miles from Amsterdam required local specie.
