Bokel is a small village in Holstein, and like hundreds of similarly minor German municipalities, it issued Notgeld during the inflationary chaos of the early 1920s when small-denomination coins had effectively vanished from circulation. Amtsbezirk Hörnerkirchen — the administrative district that governed Bokel — lent its name to the issue, giving the note a degree of bureaucratic authority it needed to function locally. Konrad Hanf in Hamburg handled a considerable volume of small-community Notgeld printing during this period, and the DeNG reference places this firmly within the documented regional issues for Schleswig-Holstein.
