| Obverse description | Ochre and black Notgeld note with a diamond-pattern guilloche underprint across the entire field. At centre, a large bold numeral '30' is set within an eye-shaped vignette formed by two sweeping black ribbon banners, the upper bearing the Gothic-script legend 'Gutschein der Stadt Düsseldorf' and the lower reading 'über dreißig Pfennig'. Eight-pointed decorative stars occupy the four corners and midpoints of the border. The lower portion carries a four-line italic text inscription stating the redemption terms, dated Düsseldorf 10.I.1920 and signed by the Oberbürgermeister. |

Düsseldorf's municipal notgeld program ran well into 1920, long after the acute coin shortage that had originally justified emergency paper issues. By this point, many German cities were producing notgeld as much for collector revenue as for genuine circulation needs — the trade in decorative small-denomination paper had become a business in itself. Whether this 30 Pfennig piece was earnestly spent or immediately set aside by a collector the moment it left the municipal office is an open question, but the timing suggests the latter was increasingly common.
