Wienerbruck is a small settlement in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria, and this 30 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — emergency small change printed by municipalities across Austria between roughly 1919 and 1921 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The issuing authority here is the Gemeinde Stiftung bei Leonfelden, a rural parish-level body with minimal administrative infrastructure, which makes the very existence of a formally printed note somewhat remarkable.
Austrian Notgeld of this period was produced in enormous variety; the Jaksch cataloguing system documents thousands of distinct local issues, many surviving only in collector hands.
