Kreisbach is a tiny Lower Austrian village — scarcely a hamlet — and its decision to issue notgeld in 1920 reflects just how completely the post-war Austrian monetary system had collapsed at the local level. Coin shortages after 1918 were so severe that hundreds of municipalities, many far smaller than any reasonable issuing authority, were effectively printing their own fractional currency just to keep small commerce moving.
Gutenberg in St. Pölten handled the printing, as they did for a considerable number of Lower Austrian municipal issues from this period. The JPR470d designation places this within the documented Jaksch-Pick notgeld catalogue — the "d" suffix indicating a distinct type within the 30-Heller denomination for this issuer.
