Lorch — known in Roman times as Lauriacum — was the site of a major legionary fortress and one of the earliest Christian communities in the Danubian provinces. The municipality's decision to issue Notgeld in 1920 was driven by the same coin shortage gripping most of provincial Austria after the collapse of the Habsburg economy, not any local crisis specific to Lorch.
Printed by Buchdruckerei Enns, a small regional press in the nearby town of Enns, the production quality is modest even by Notgeld standards. The 0564b designation in the Jaksch catalog distinguishes this from an earlier Lorch emission — minor variations in text or color separate the two issues.
