Issued as part of Spain's ongoing commemorative program honoring figures central to its cultural history, this piece marks the 400th anniversary of El Greco's death in Toledo in 1614. Born Domenikos Theotokopoulos in Crete, he spent the dominant years of his career in Toledo after failing to secure patronage at Philip II's Escorial — a rejection that, ironically, kept him rooted in the city most associated with his name.
The €30 face value denomination was introduced by the Royal Mint specifically for silver commemoratives targeting the collector market, sitting above the €20 issues but below the heavier prestige pieces.
