The plebiscite in question took place on 23 December 1990, when 88.5% of eligible Slovenian voters chose independence from Yugoslavia — one of the cleanest mandates in any dissolution-era referendum on the continent. Slovenia's formal separation followed six months later, after the Ten-Day War and subsequent international recognition.

Part of Slovenia's ongoing commemorative silver program, which has issued collector pieces tied to national milestones since euro adoption in 2007.
