The "Una and the Lion" design originates from William Wyon's 1839 pattern crown, produced to mark Victoria's coronation but never released for circulation — considered too fine for everyday use. The original piece is one of the most celebrated British pattern coins ever struck. This 2019 issue revives that composition for the young Elizabeth II, pairing it with the British Virgin Islands' authority to issue commemorative coinage under Crown dependency arrangements that have made the territory a reliable vehicle for prestige bullion programs since the 1970s.
