Reverse description A single kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is depicted perched upon an ornamental stone bird bath, rendered in high relief against a finely textured field. Surrounding the bird bath are naturalistic sprays of Agapanthus in bloom, a flowering plant widely cultivated in Australian gardens, adding botanical detail to the composition. The legend KOOKABURRA arcs along the lower portion of the design, flanked by the date 2022 and the weight and fineness inscriptions. The Perth Mint's P mintmark and the initials NM appear within the reverse field. The overall design conveys a tranquil garden scene, characteristic of the Perth Mint's annual Kookaburra bullion series.

Additional information

The Kookaburra series, running since 1990, changes its reverse design annually — a deliberate policy by the Perth Mint to drive collector demand through artificial scarcity of any single year's design. The 2022 one-kilogram issue sits in the upper tier of the series by sheer physical presence, though the format itself has been offered since the 1990s expansion into large-format bullion.

The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by sculptor Jody Clark, was introduced across Commonwealth coinage in 2015 — the last effigy approved before her death in September 2022, making this among the final Australian coins struck under that portrait while she was still alive.
