The shield is surmounted by the papal umbrella (umbraculum) with crossed keys behind, and flanked on either side by tasselled ecclesiastical hat cords (fiocchi). The circular legend SEDE VACANTE MDCCCXXX arcs across the upper field, while the engraver's signature N. and mint name ROMA C. appear in the lower exergue. The coin's periphery is bounded by a toothed border. |
