Additional information

Sede Vacante coinage was struck under the authority of the Cardinal Camerlengo during the interregnum following a pope's death, before a successor was elected. In 1830, that office fell to Pier Francesco Galleffi, who administered the Church's temporal affairs after the death of Pius VIII in November of that year. The conclave that followed was notably brief — just over two weeks — producing Gregory XVI by December.

Galleffi himself had been a serious papal candidate at two prior conclaves. He never achieved the throne but struck coin in its name three times.
