Surrounding the temple in an arc along the upper periphery is the inscription 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) in Chinese characters. Along the lower portion of the field, flanking the date 2007, is the commemorative inscription 中国熊猫金币发行25周年纪念 (Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Issuance of Chinese Panda Gold Coins). The Chinese Panda series launched in 1982 as one of the first modern bullion programs from the People's Republic, entering a market then dominated by the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. What distinguished it from the outset was the annual design change — a deliberate policy decision that made each year's issue collectible in its own right rather than interchangeable with the last. The 2007 pieces marking the 25th anniversary were struck at both the Beijing and Shenyang mints.
The 3 Yuan denomination is specific to this commemorative issue and does not appear elsewhere in the standard Panda bullion lineup.
