M.DCI.VII and records biographical details, his betrothal, untimely death on IX August, and concludes with verses of mourning: PARENTIBVS FAMILIAE PATRIAE VT QVONDAM SPES AMOR ET DELI... SIC NVNC LVCTUS LACRYMAEQVE ET DESO-LATIO. The inscription fills the entire flan with no central image, the text arranged in evenly spaced horizontal lines. A reeded border frames the entire reverse. |

Rudolph August of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel died in 1704, which makes the 1676 date here almost certainly a regnal or commemorative reference point rather than a death issue — possibly marking a political settlement or territorial consolidation during his reign. Large multiple-thaler pieces of this type were not struck for circulation; they served as presentation objects distributed at court, and surviving examples almost invariably show minimal contact marks as a result.
The 84-gram format places this firmly in the tradition of Brunswick Löser coinage, a regional phenomenon where the dukes issued oversized silver pieces as a deliberate display of mining wealth drawn from the Harz Mountain operations.
