In the lower field, four dying men are depicted prostrate upon the ground, afflicted by five fiery flying serpents attacking from above, referencing the plague narrative of Numbers 21. A multi-line legend in early New High German runs through the field, quoting the divine command to Moses to fashion and erect the serpent as a sign of salvation. |
