John de la Cassière served as Grand Master during one of the most consequential periods in Hospitaller history — his tenure began just one year after the Battle of Lepanto, when the Order's naval role in the Holy League victory had briefly restored its military prestige across Catholic Europe. The tari, a denomination with roots in Norman Sicily and ultimately in Arab monetary tradition, remained the Order's workhorse silver unit on Malta long after comparable denominations had disappeared elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
De la Cassière's rule ended badly: he was deposed by his own knights in 1581, briefly imprisoned, and died in Rome the following year while his appeal to Pope Gregory XIII was still unresolved.
