Wrangel Island sits in the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia, administered as a nature reserve since 1976 and one of the last known refuges of the woolly mammoth — dwarf populations survived there until roughly 1650 BC, millennia after extinction on the mainland. Russia has issued collector coins tied to its Arctic territories with some regularity, and this piece fits squarely into the CBR's ongoing natural monuments and protected zones program, which has produced hundreds of issues since the 1990s.
