The Siege of Leningrad lasted 872 days — from September 1941 to January 1944 — making it the longest siege of a major city in modern warfare. Soviet forces broke the blockade on January 27, 1944, by which point an estimated 800,000 to 1.5 million civilians had died, the majority from starvation. Russia commemorates the anniversary annually, and this 2019 issue marks the 75th year since the lifting of the siege.
