| 正面描述 | Draped bust of Queen Mary I of Scots in left-facing profile, her elaborately dressed hair adorned with a jewelled caul, wearing a beaded necklace visible at the truncation. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the late medieval hammered style, with the legend surrounding the portrait in the outer field separated by pellet stops. |

Mary I's first period coinage preceded her marriage to the Dauphin Francis in April 1558, after which Scottish coin iconography shifted to accommodate a joint Franco-Scottish dynastic program. The 3 Pound Piece — the "Ryall" as it was commonly termed — was among the highest-value gold denominations circulating in mid-sixteenth century Scotland, a kingdom whose monetary supply was chronically thin in gold and heavily dependent on imported bullion routed through trade with France and the Low Countries.
Spink 5397 covers a type known in very small surviving numbers, which is consistent with the broader pattern of Scottish gold from this reign rather than any single minting event.
