| Additional information |
Riga had been under Swedish control since 1621, and by 1700 the city's municipal coinage operated under the shadow of the Great Northern War, which broke out that very year when a coalition led by Peter the Great, Augustus II of Poland, and Frederick IV of Denmark moved simultaneously against Charles XII. The Russian siege of Riga would not succeed until 1710, but the war's outbreak effectively ended the city's autonomous minting tradition. This two-year issue is among the last municipal coinages Riga would produce before the city passed permanently out of Swedish hands.
