Additional information

Alof de Wignacourt served as Grand Master from 1601 to 1622, a tenure notable for commissioning Caravaggio — who arrived on Malta in 1607 seeking a knighthood — and for significant fortification works funded partly through revenue from coinage like this small copper issue. The Order's monetary authority over Malta was a practical necessity: the island's economy required small-denomination pieces for daily transactions that larger silver coinage could not serve.

The picciolo denominations of this period are frequently encountered with weak peripheral detail, a consequence of shallow dies and uneven copper flans rather than wear.
