Cuba issued this coin during a period of acute economic deterioration — the Soviet Union's collapse was already underway, and Havana was about to lose the subsidized oil, food imports, and trade arrangements that had underpinned the economy for three decades. The "Special Period in Time of Peace," declared by Castro in 1990, followed almost immediately. Circulating a coin bearing Guevara's image at that precise moment carried an unmistakable ideological charge: a reaffirmation of revolutionary credentials precisely when the material basis for Cuban socialism was disintegrating.
