British West Africa's threepence coinage was normally struck in cupro-nickel, but 1920 saw experimental brass flans tested — almost certainly in response to postwar metal supply disruptions that were forcing colonial mints to reconsider material contracts across multiple denominations. Pattern strikes of this kind rarely made it beyond Royal Mint trial cabinets, which explains the near-total absence of examples in collector hands outside institutional holdings.
