Bavaria issued this piece in 1918 to mark the golden wedding anniversary of King Ludwig III and Queen Maria Therese — one of the more politically tone-deaf commemorative decisions of the war period. Germany was in its final year of fighting, supplies were critically short, and silver coinage had largely vanished from circulation. Producing a royal anniversary coin under those conditions was not lost on contemporaries.
Ludwig III was deposed just months later, in November 1918, making this the last commemorative issue of the Bavarian monarchy.
