Ernest Louis marked his 1917 jubilee — 25 years on the throne — during the depths of the First World War, a moment of remarkable political awkwardness for a reigning German grand duke to be celebrating anything publicly. The regular issue was struck in silver at the Berlin mint, but trial and pattern pieces in pewter were produced as part of the approval process for the obverse design. This piece, catalogued as a Schaaf 77G2 variety, is an obverse trial specifically — meaning the reverse was either absent, plain, or from a different die pairing not considered final.
At 96.7 grams, the weight reflects pewter's density relative to the much lighter production strikes, confirming this was never intended as a circulation piece.
