Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse facing left, with a small sprig of laurel below the neck truncation. The portrait is rendered in moderate relief within a beaded inner border. The circumferential legend, divided by star separators, reads ERNST. LUDWIG. GROSS HERZOG. VON. HESSEN. with the jubilee dates *1892*1917* and the Berlin mint mark A. This piece is an obverse trial struck in pewter, mounted within a broad, raised flanged collar characteristic of die-trial production.
