Radolfzell, a small town on the southern shore of the Bodensee, issued this note during the peak of Germany's Kleingeldersatz crisis, when the collapse of coin circulation forced hundreds of municipalities to print their own fractional currency. Stähle & Friedel in Stuttgart handled an enormous volume of such commissions from southwestern German towns in 1921, producing workmanlike results on short deadlines for issuers with no standing relationship with major security printers.
