Salzwedel is a small Altmark town in what is now Saxony-Anhalt, and its municipal government issued this 3 Mark note during the notgeld crisis of 1921 — a period when the Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small-denomination currency pushed hundreds of German municipalities into printing their own.
