Maria Theresa's hold on Hungary was legally complicated from the start — the Pragmatic Sanction that allowed her to inherit had never been tested, and her early reign saw Bavarian and French forces briefly occupy Prague. Hungarian noble support, secured in part through concessions at the 1741 Diet of Pressburg, proved decisive.
