Leopold I inherited Bohemia in 1657 following Ferdinand III's death, and the Kuttenberg mint — one of the oldest silver-striking facilities in Central Europe, drawing on the Kutná Hora silver deposits that had financed Bohemian kings since the 13th century — remained active through the early decades of his reign before output was progressively consolidated elsewhere. The eleven-year span of this issue coincides almost exactly with the costly early phase of Leopold's wars against the Ottoman Empire and the fiscal strain of rebuilding after the Thirty Years' War.
