Gelderland was among the first provinces to declare for the Batavian Republic following the French-backed Patriot revolution of January 1795, and this issue reflects the chaotic transitional moment before the new republic had established unified federal coinage. Each province briefly continued striking under its own authority, producing a patchwork of regional issues that would be rendered obsolete within a few years as centralization took hold. The 3 Gulden denomination had deep roots in the Dutch monetary system but was already an awkward unit by this period.
