In her raised right hand she holds a hat of liberty atop a long pole (the vrijheidsstaf), while her left hand rests upon a shield bearing the arms of the Dutch Republic. The figure stands on a ground line within the open field of the coin, conveying allegorical strength and independence. The Latin motto legend encircles the periphery, reading HAC NITIMVR HANC TVEMVR, meaning 'On her we lean, her we defend.'
