Ernst Johann von Biron spent two decades in Siberian exile before Catherine the Great restored him to the Courland ducal throne in 1763 — meaning these coins were struck by a man in his seventies, returned to power after a coup had ended his first reign in 1740. The duchy's coinage was effectively a political statement of restored legitimacy, not fiscal necessity; Courland's monetary economy was deeply entangled with Russian imperial interests throughout this period.
The two-year window of production makes this a short-lived type. Biron abdicated in favor of his son Peter in 1769.
