Gábor Báthori's reign over Transylvania was among the most turbulent of the principality's existence. His aggressive campaigns against the Transylvanian Saxons — including the brutal sack of Nagyszeben (Sibiu) in 1610 — disrupted trade networks and mint operations alike. The Saxons controlled several of the towns responsible for striking these small silver pieces, and the political violence of those years almost certainly interrupted production runs, which accounts in part for the wide range of Resch varieties catalogued across this type.
Báthori was assassinated in 1613 by his own hajdú soldiers, ending a five-year reign that left Transylvania politically exhausted.
