The denomination mark '3 · GVL ·' appears above the shield, with the date divided '7' and '9' flanking the shield on either side to complete the year 1579. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading 'PERFER • ET • OBDVRA BRVXELA • 3 • GVL • 7 9', the motto meaning 'Endure and resist', an exhortation to the besieged city. The corners of the square planchet extend beyond the circular legend, characteristic of the klippe format. |
