Seurre is a small Burgundian town on the Saône, and this piece belongs to the wave of locally issued emergency-style currency that swept French municipalities in the mid-1990s following a brief revival of interest in monnaies de nécessité for collector and tourist markets. These issues had no legal tender status but circulated informally at participating merchants.
