Christian V inherited a Danish monarchy that had, just years before his accession, surrendered the Scanian provinces to Sweden under the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde — the most territorially damaging peace in Danish history. The prestige coinage struck at Christiania during his reign served partly to project royal authority over a kingdom still adjusting to its reduced geography. Pattern issues like this type were produced in multiple die configurations, and Brekke's classification system distinguishes them by subtle variations in the arrangement of the royal titulature and mintmaster's marks rather than by any change in the monetary specification.
