The mountain avens (*Dryas integrifolia*) became the official floral emblem of the Northwest Territories in 1957, chosen in part because it thrives in the subarctic tundra where little else survives — a genuinely apt symbol for a jurisdiction covering nearly 1.35 million square kilometres with a population under 50,000. This coin is part of the RCM's broader floral emblem series documenting each province and territory's designated plant.
The .9999 fine silver specification places it among the RCM's higher-purity issues, a standard the mint adopted more aggressively in collector series from the 2010s onward.
